This school season there were 20 girls that wrestled which shows the girls’ program is continuing to grow.
Ellie Ringwood is in her second year coaching girls’ middle school wrestling. She enjoys building relationships with her athletes and feels wrestling is a sport that takes a lot of mental and physical toughness. She feels if girls can overcome this it shows them they’re willing to do hard things to achieve greatness. The girls attended multiple all girls tournaments this season, including the ‘Battle of the Braids’ which was held at FOHS.
“The girls had a great season, a lot of wins, some losses but overall the girls had fun and a lot of them tried something very new and stuck with it and that made me proud,” Ringwood said.
Mia Niederhauser is an eighth grader on the Voyager team. This year was her first year wrestling for the school. She felt she should try something new for new experiences. Coach Wackerman saw her during P.E and said she should try wrestling.
“I enjoyed trying something new and as the season went on I realized how much I liked being on the mat,” Niederhauser said.
Violet Adams is a seventh grader on the Pathfinder team. Violet feels she improved in wrestling and made many new friends that she didn’t know before this season. She hopes to wrestle for the school next year.
“Everyone was super uplifting even if you lost; you would still have people right by your side supporting you,” Adams said.
Lexi Newman is an eighth grader on the Voyager team. This year was her first year wrestling for the school. Lexi was recognized during the P.E wrestling unit by Wackerman and recommended she try the sport like he did with Niederhauser.
“I enjoyed that I got time to spend with friends… and I loved how we prayed before every meet, and everyone was supportive,” Newman said.
