Ninety six Valentine Grams (Val Grams) were sold by StuCo for a dollar a piece to help pay for events like the 8th grade dance.
Some members went to Advisory classes to sell the Val grams. StuCo treasurer Bennett Ballew didn’t sell them himself, but felt it was a good opportunity for the kids to buy a gram for their friends. He felt it was a leadership opportunity for StuCo members.
“The kids in Stuco got to [show] responsibility and they got to pass [Valgrams] out,” Ballew said.
Because of StuCo members leading this event, there were some mistakes. One was the Valgram being sold for $2 instead of a dollar at first.
StuCo sponsor Amanda Holder noted that this was a mix up and refunds were given to those that overpaid.
Another mix up was the Valgrams not being handed out on time. Scarlett Chaffin, an eighth grader on the Pioneer team, bought a Valgram for herself and a friend.
At first, neither received it until a few days after everyone else. This incident angered her.
“I really wanted some candy,” Chaffin said. “My friend was not having a good week that week and I thought [of] candy. I was kinda angry but it’s ok.”
Holder noted that there was a delay in handing them out due to snow days.
“Ones that didn’t get handed out were put in teachers’ mailboxes,” Holder said.
Regardless of the mix up the experience was fun for StuCo members like Jade Gaither the vice president.
“It was fun to get a chance to talk to other advisory students and I was surprised at how many people bought Valentine Grams for their friends/boyfriend/girlfriend,” Gaither said.
